What are the best family PS5 games?
The PS5 hosts a ton of games, but not all of them are family-friendly! After all, you’re probably keen to sit down with the kids for a rousing Mortal Kombat 11 match.
Fortunately, plenty of games are geared toward a younger audience that are just as fun for adults as they are for kids!
Today, we’re looking at the best games you can play as a family, so you can easily find your next favorite.
The 10 Best PS5 Family Games
Each game on our list was chosen based on players’ reviews, accessibility, and how fun it is to play.
We’ve tried to include titles that are appropriate for all ages so that even the youngest gamers in your family can enjoy them!
So, if you’re ready to find your next game night favorite, here’s our list of the 10 best PS5 family games:
10. Sonic Frontiers
Kicking off our list is one of the most popular video game characters of all time, Sonic the Hedgehog.
In Sonic Frontiers, the adventure never slows down as you race across five massive islands, each with its own unique challenges.
While the main story will keep the family occupied for hours, there are also side quests, puzzles, and mini-games like fishing to try out!
You can even discover portals to cyberspace that offer more difficult challenges in unique 3D platforming levels.
We really have to give props to the level design in Sonic Frontiers, as it’s some of the best we’ve ever seen in the franchise.
Not only does everything look amazing on the PS5, but there’s fast-paced action for days and a story that will keep the whole family engaged.
This is easily one of the best 3D Sonic games ever made, in our opinion, and we highly recommend giving it a try for yourself!
9. LEGO Bricktales
LEGOs are a childhood favorite of many people, but they aren’t just for kids. As this game proves, they can be fun for folks of all ages!
Bricktales is an innovative puzzle-adventure game that allows players to use a brick-by-brick building mechanic to solve problems.
In this LEGO universe, players can adventure across numerous diorama biomes that have been crafted entirely out of blocks.
Throughout each of these worlds, there are Minifigures to help, wonders to uncover, and secrets to unlock.
Every diorama also offers special construction areas where players are given a set of bricks and must figure out how to put them together.
However, there is no “right way” to use these bricks; instead, you can use your creativity to create whatever designs you want.
There is also a sandbox mode that provides you with more boxes to improve your creations once you’ve built something that works.
The story in this game is also wonderfully engaging and filled with the unique brand of humor we’ve come to love from LEGO games.
Although some of the puzzles may be a bit difficult for younger children, LEGO Bricktales, as a whole, is fun for everyone!
8. Minecraft Legends
A spin-off set in the Minecraft Universe, Legends is one of the best PS5 strategy games you can play as a family!
Minecraft Legends takes place during a war between the overworld and the evil Piglins from the Nether, and it’s up to players to save the world.
While it looks like Minecraft, the mechanics in this game more closely resemble a real-time action strategy game.
There are epic battles to save villages, alliances to forge with familiar mobs, and a resource-rich world filled with unique biomes to explore.
Players can also choose to either team up with or challenge friends in a multiplayer mode that features both co-op and competitive options.
We definitely think this is a great game to play as a family, especially if you’re already a fan of the OG Minecraft!
It’s definitely fun to be able to engage in large-scale battles in the Minecraft universe, especially when playing with a team!
7. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl
With Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 leak all but confirming the sequel, now is a great time to dive into this game for yourself!
In this game, players get to duke it out as some of the most iconic Nickelodeon characters, ranging from Spongebob to Rugrats.
Similar to many of the best PS5 fighting games, in All-Star Brawl, there are many themed levels to choose from where multiple players can fight.
All of the characters have their own unique playstyles and movesets that are based on their personalities, so they’re recognizable.
Up to four players can take on each other in local multiplayer, making it one of the best party games for families, similar to Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
There are 25 colorful characters from 17 series to choose from, and they each have their own stages based on the shows they come from!
All-Star Brawl also comes with a single-player arcade mode and a sports mode where players have to try and knock a ball into the opponent’s goal.
While this is one of the best kids games on the PS5 because there are so many classic Nickelodeon characters, it’s perfect for older players as well!
6. Overcooked! All You Can Eat
Overcooked! All You Can Eat is easily one of the best multiplayer PS5 games, and it combines both games in the series together in 4K definition!
This game is all about prepping, cooking, plating, and serving food to hungry customers as quickly as you can.
However, there are over 200 levels, and each gets progressively more absurd with numerous obstacles to make cooking more difficult!
If you’re not tripping over each other trying to run around in the kitchen, you’ll be desperately trying to dodge everything from fireballs to moving platforms.
There are also many different game modes to choose from, including campaign and survival, the latter of which tasks you with putting out as much food as possible.
While it may be a bit too fast-paced for very young gamers, for families with older kids, All You Can Eat is an amazing game.
It will really challenge everyone to work together, making it both fun and a great exercise in communication!
5. Planet Coaster
Similar to Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, Planet Coaster is all about building your own theme park, and it gives you a ton of freedom for creativity!
There are four different game modes; Career, Challenge, Sandbox, and Scenario Editor, that you can choose from.
Career mode is fairly straightforward, and it requires you to construct rides, hire staff, and manage resources.
Meanwhile, Sandbox mode gives you the ability to build your own park from the ground up, while Challenge mode is similar but with added difficulty.
The Scenario Editor is more like Career Mode, but it allows players to customize tasks in the parks they’ve created and saved.
We really love Sandbox Mode, especially as a family activity, since it gives everyone the freedom to really design anything they want!
Although managing a park may be a bit much for younger players, it can also be a great way for older kids to learn to multitask and prioritize in a fun way.
While it’s only single-player, we’ve found that it can be fun to take turns in Sandbox mode and let everyone create their own areas of the park!
4. MultiVersus
Okay, so this is a bit of an odd one out on our list because its beta recently went offline, and the full game is slated to be released in 2024.
However, we were able to play it while it was live, and we’ve added it to our list because it is an amazing game!
Like Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, MultiVersus is a platform fighter where players compete on different stages in either 1v1 or free-for-all battles.
There are 23 playable characters, all of whom are from Warner Bros., including Batman, Shaggy, Steven Universe, and Arya Stark.
Each character can be any of 5 classes, such as Assassin, Support, Mage, Bruiser, and Tank, making them better suited for different playstyles.
Many of the original voice actors have also come back to reprise their roles, and it’s really cool to hear them while playing.
We highly recommend keeping an eye out for this game when it fully releases because it truly is fun for the whole family!
3. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
LEGO games are always great for families, and The Skywalker Saga is no different, even if you’re not a diehard Star Wars fan!
Not only is this one of the best LEGO games of all time, but it’s also one of the franchise’s most massive titles to date.
This game spans all nine of the Skywalker Saga films, which includes all films from the original trilogy, as well as the prequels and sequels.
There are 23 planets to discover and explore, as well as over 300 characters you can unlock, including variants from different films.
Players can take on the roles of both legendary heroes and villains as they visit iconic locations and play through the series’ most memorable storylines.
Even if you’re not a big fan of Star Wars or haven’t seen all of the movies, this game remains incredibly fun and entertaining.
It is simple enough for even younger kids to enjoy, but has more than enough action and humor for adults as well.
We also love that it has split-screen co-op, so you can play together as a family throughout the entire campaign!
2. Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Sackboy is a spin-off from the incredibly popular LittleBigPlanet and the iconic character takes center stage in this adventure.
In this 3D platformer, players get to control the titular character with the goal of completing a series of increasingly difficult levels.
All levels have collectible objects you can find which must be collected in order to unlock the ending level.
It also has both local co-op and online multiplayer, so up to four players can take on the game together.
A Big Adventure is a bit like Super Mario 3D World, and the gameplay is incredibly casual, so even young kids can enjoy it.
The visuals are also stunning on the PS5, and this game supports 4K graphics and up to 120 FPS, making gameplay very smooth.
Sackboy is one of the best couch co-op family games by far, and it really caters to gamers of all ages.
Even if you haven’t played the original LittleBigPlanet, it’s easy to jump into this game and not feel like you’re missing the plot!
1. Astro’s Playroom
Taking our number one spot is Astro’s Playroom, a game that comes pre-installed on the PS5!
While many dismiss it as a free tech demo that shows off what the DualSense controller can do, it is actually an incredibly fun family game!
This 3D platformer allows players to control the robotic character of Astro as he jumps, hovers, and punches his way through numerous levels.
In this game, there are four worlds that each contain four levels, two of which are standard platformers, while the other two make use of the controller’s abilities.
The haptic feedback produced by the controller provides realistic vibrations that vary depending on different types of actions.
For example, walking on sand, metal, or through water will have its own unique feedback that allows players to really feel the difference in materials.
Some levels even require players to tilt the controller and press the adaptive triggers to hop as a frog!
What older gamers will love about this game is that there are plenty of references and easter eggs revolving around classic PlayStation characters and older consoles.
It’s a bit nostalgic if you’ve been a fan of the console for a while, and while you reminisce, the kids will be enjoying all of the great platforming!
Astro’s Playroom is easily one of the best PS5 exclusive games, and you don’t even have to pay for it!
