The Playstation 5 (PS5) has brought forth a plethora of strategy games, and here are the top ten among them. First, “XCOM: Chimera Squad” offers turn-based tactical combat with an alien invasion setting. “Crusader Kings III” lets players build and manage their medieval dynasty. “Desperados III” is a Wild West stealth game, while “Hearts of Iron IV” allows players to rewrite history through World War II. “Hades” explores Greek mythology in an isometric action game. “Gears Tactics,” “Wasteland 3,” “Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition,” “Iron Harvest,” and “Empire of Sin” are also highly acclaimed strategy games for the PS5..
What are the best PS5 strategy games?
There are a lot of games that make players strategize in order to progress, and the genre itself is incredibly broad.
However, some noteworthy games have stood out from the rest on the PS5 as ones that strategy fans shouldn’t pass up.
Today, we’re taking a closer look at these games and going over everything that makes them so special.
The 10 Best PS5 Strategy Games
Compiling the best strategy games wasn’t easy, but we’ve tried to include a little something for every type of player.
Each game on this list was selected based on its gameplay, strategy elements, and reviews from other players.
So, if you’re ready to start formulating your next adventure, here’s our list of the 10 best PS5 strategy games:
10. Planet Coaster
Kicking off our list, we have Planet Coaster, a game that’s all about creating your own theme park!
In Planet Coaster, the goal is to design your own theme park and be as creative as you possibly can be.
All coasters can be assembled piece by piece, allowing you to make some seriously wild rides.
You can even cause coasters to fly into crowds, though unfortunately — er, we mean, fortunately — you can’t actually kill anyone!
As for strategizing, in this game, you will have to manage everything about your park to make it as enjoyable as possible.
This is easier said than done because, as it turns out, people are kind of hard to please!
Planet Coaster is definitely worth playing if you like a fun-filled challenge that really lets your creativity run wild!
9. Anno 1800
Anno 1800 welcomes players into the Industrial Age, where they can choose how they want to shape the world!
Not only is this game a strong contender for being one of the best PS5 simulation games, but it’s a huge sandbox where players have a ton of freedom.
The goal of this game is to build your own empire that will spread across the world and conquer the burgeoning technological landscape.
Anno 1800 is a city-builder and resource management game that also features its own story-based campaign.
While you can play against other players, in a single-player game, you will be going head to head with AI rules who also want to rise to prosperity.
Will you be able to expand your empire and take control, or will you fall under the boots of other nations?
You’ll have to think strategically if you want to come out on top in this game!
8. I Was A Teenage Exocolonist
This RPG game takes place on an alien planet where players can choose their own adventures and take part in card-based battles!
In this game, players take on the role of one of humanity’s first extrasolar space colonists, and they must struggle to adapt to a whole new world.
However, the stakes are higher than you may think, as every choice you make will impact those around you and the fate of your whole colony!
What really makes this game interesting is that you can use the memories of your character’s past lives to explore over 800 unique story events.
You can also pick a job, learn different skills, make friends, fall in love, or just wander around the planet!
I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is not only one of the best PS5 RPG games but also one of the most unique strategy games ever made!
There is a lot more to this game than meets the eye, and if you love strategy games with deep stories, this is the game for you!
7. Let’s Build A Zoo
A bit like Stardew Valley meets zoo management sim, Let’s Build a Zoo is a delightful game that gives you a ton of room for creativity.
In this game, you can construct your own animal enclosures, hire specialized zookeepers and vets, and import over 500 different animals.
However, while making everything look nice is half the battle, the other half means keeping both the animals and visitors happy.
Of course, you can also play the role of mad scientist and start splicing together strains of animal DNA.
There are over 300,000 different animal combinations you can create to truly excite your guests!
Want an exhibit filled with Elephant Giraffes? You can do that! Flamingo Crocodiles? You bet!
Let’s Build a Zoo really lets you go crazy with DNA splicing, and it will keep you enthralled for hours!
While the game is ultimately about managing the zoo in its entirety, it’s really easy to lose track of what you’re supposed to be doing while you’re creating cow chickens.
6. The DioField Chronicle
The DioField Chronicle is one of the best JRPG games on the PS5, and its real-time tactical battles are incredibly engaging.
While it’s a bit like Final Fantasy Tactics, it allows for more free movement that’s reminiscent of games like XCOM.
In this game, players get to control a party of characters and use them to complete missions and engage in battle.
Set on a war-torn continent, this game is all about a mercenary group, the Blue Foxes, who have to work to end the conflict.
One thing we have to praise this game for in particular is its impressive visuals, which are extremely well rendered.
The DioField Chronicle is as gorgeous to look at as it is fun to play, and we certainly put hours into exploring this world!
This strategy game has a little bit of something for everyone, and we highly recommend playing it for yourself if you get the chance!
5. Humanity
Humanity is one of the more strange strategy games, and it revolves around a Shiba Inu commanding crowds of people.
Now, if you’re not 100% sure what a Shiba Inu is, it’s basically a Japanese breed of dog that’s incredibly adorable.
So, players take on the role of this mystical glowing dog with the goal of leading a gigantic marching crowd through numerous puzzles.
As the dog, you can order the crowd to jump, shoot, climb, push, turn, and float their way through 90 different stages.
Each puzzle stage brings something new to the table, and they get progressively more difficult as you advance.
There are even boss battles and platformer levels to contend with, which really makes things challenging!
If and when you finish all 90 story levels, there are tons of user-created stages that you can take on afterward.
You can even create your own strategic levels and share them with other players to show off your skills!
4. Inscryption
Inscryption is a deckbuilding card game that also boards elements of escape-room puzzles and psychological horror.
Throughout the game, players will watch found footage of a vlogger who comes across a game called Inscryption which holds many dark secrets.
Players will get to learn more firsthand when they themselves get sucked into the game after interacting with a mysterious dealer named Leshy.
While the less you know about this game going in, the better, we will say that this game is highly unique.
Inscryption will challenge you intellectually while also thoroughly creeping you out and subverting your expectations.
There are three acts to playthrough, each of which changes the game’s style and who you’re facing off against.
We’d strongly urge you not to read anything about this game before diving in, as knowing too much will really spoil the experience!
3. Crusader Kings III
Crusader Kings III is one of the best sandbox games, and it revolves around building your own dynasty.
This grand strategy game is set during the Middle Ages, and players can choose to begin in either 967 or 1066.
When your starting character either dies or is disposed of, you will continue playing as their heir.
This will continue throughout the centuries as you work to develop your own dynasty and bring it to greatness.
However, the game ends in 1453, so you won’t get an unlimited amount of time to build up your lineage!
Like Crusader Kings II, all characters come with traits that will impact their behavior and stats.
Every time you make a character go against one of their traits, their stress level will increase, which can make them susceptible to illness.
Other things to consider include the various government types you can choose to form, as well as religious wars such as crusades and jihads you can organize.
Suffice it to say there is a ton of content in this game that gives players a lot of freedom.
It also just got a new DLC called Tournaments and Tours that adds even more content to play around with!
2. Tactics Ogre Reborn
This RPG strategy game uses turn-based combat tactics set in a beautifully designed 2.5D fantasy world.
Based on the 2010 game Tactic Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Reborn features improved graphics and sound while remaining faithful to the original material.
In this game, the choices you make will impact how the story plays out, and there are numerous paths and endings to explore.
The combat AI has also been overhauled to make battles more challenging at strategic, so you’ll always have to be on your guard.
There is also a unit-by-unit level system that allows you to craft many combinations of classes with different skills, equipment, and magic.
One thing we really love is that you can unlock the World Tarot as you progress, which allows you to go back to a prior point in the game with your current forces.
This can allow you to re-do sections of the story to change ithe outcome if you feel like you’ve made the wrong decision.
The World Tarot also enables you to rewind moves during combat, so if one of your tactical moves doesn’t work out, you can try something different!
We highly recommend giving this game a chance if you’re a fan of tactical combat and fascinating stories!
1. Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Taking our number one spot is Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a game that gives players the chance to create their own superhero called The Hunter.
As The Hunter, players can choose to wield one of over 30 different superpowers while leading a team of iconic Marvel heroes.
There are 12 heroes in the base game, including Scarlet Witch, Captain America, Doctor Strange, Hulk, Iron Man, and Spider-Man.
However, there are five DLCs that add new missions and heroes, such as Venom, Storm, and Morbius.
The story of this game revolves around The Hunter, a child of Lilith, who teams up with various heroes to stop their mother, who has united with the forces of Hydra.
Aside from the original story, what we really love about this game is its tactical card-based battle system that the creators of XCOM designed.
With this system, players can move around the battlefield to line up the perfect combos to unleash devastating abilities against opponents.
It’s also super awesome that you get to interact with so many iconic Marvel characters and get to know them better as you fight alongside them.
We highly recommend this game for its excellent strategic gameplay and its incredibly engaging story!
