Crafting isn’t a terribly important skill in Old School Runescape, but it still comes with a number of benefits that make it useful.

There are many ways to max out this skill, but some are faster or more profitable than others.

Don’t worry if this seems confusing because we are going to walk you through everything you need to know step-by-step!

OSRS Crafting Guide: Level 1-99

Since there are so many ways to train crafting, it can be difficult to know what to do if you’re new to the process.

That’s why we’ve created this OSRS crafting guide, to make reaching level 99 as easy as possible!

In this guide, we will be covering everything from tips and tricks to the various techniques you can use to gain XP.

We will also be taking a look at some of the quests you can use to gain crafting experience if you need a break from grinding.

Why Train Crafting In OSRS?

While crafting isn’t one of the most useful skills in OSRS, it can be used to make a decent profit once it is maxed out.

It is also needed for some quests in the game, which makes it something you won’t want to ignore forever.

Crafting is also one of the best skills in the game for leveling quickly if you have a lot of money.

This means you can essentially buy your way up to level 99, so long as you have enough gold to spare.

Additionally, maxing out this skill will allow you to grab one of the best skillcapes in OSRS, so you can show off your achievement.

So, let’s dive right in so you can start working toward becoming a master craftsman in Old School Runescape!

Things To know

Before we talk about quests and training methods, let’s first take a look at the useful items you’ll need to grab.

Crafting covers a lot of different mediums, including jewelry making, weaving, pottery, and glass blowing.

Because of this, you will need a range of tools, depending on what you are trying to create.

Some of the most necessary tools include:

  • Chisel
  • Jewelry mold
  • Glassblowing pipe
  • Needle and thread
  • Hammer
  • Elemental Orbs

A chisel is needed for cutting gems at any level, while jewel molds are needed for crafting gold or silver jewelry.

Similarly, a glassblowing pipe is needed for crafting glass items, while a needle and thread are used when working with leather.

Hammers are needed for making dragonhide shields or birdhouses, and elemental orbs are used to make battlestaves.

While you won’t need all of these tools right off the bat, they are worth keeping in mind as you increase your level.

Tips & Tricks

Lastly, before we get started, let’s take a look at some tips and tricks that can help you reach level 99.

One of the best things to stock up on is mushroom pie, which can boost your crafting level by +4.

This is useful for reaching a requirement for a quest or unlocking higher experience rates when you’re grinding.

You can also use the poison chalice to raise your crafting level by +1, though this is completely random and can also have disastrous effects.

By far, the best item you can use is the mushroom pie, and we would recommend sticking to those when you need to boost your crafting skill level.

Quests For Crafting experience

If you want to gain crafting experience while questing, there are many quests that you could undertake to boost your level.

However, some of these also come with additional requirements that will have to be met before they can be completed.

In this section, we’ve chosen to highlight progressively advanced quests that provide increasing levels of XP.

1. Animal Magnetism

This intermediate quest requires you to have 18 slayer, 19 crafting, 30 ranged, and 35 woodcutting to complete.

You will also need to finish The Restless Ghost, Ernest the Chicken, and Priest in Peril before it will be available.

To start this quest, you will have to speak to Ava in Draynor Manor, just north of Draynor Village.

When completed, Animal Magnetism provides 1,000 crafting XP along with one of the best ranged weapons in OSRS, Ava’s Accumulator.

2. Cold War

Cold War is the first, and currently only quest in the Penguin series, and it requires 10 hunter, 30 crafting, 30 agility, 34 construction, and 15 thieving to complete.

To start this quest, you need to speak with Larry at the Ardougne Zoo, located in the southern part of East Ardougne.

When it is complete, this quest awards 2,000 crafting XP and the ability to use the Penguin agility course.

3. Elemental Workshop I

This is a short, novice-level quest that only requires 20 mining, smithing, and crafting to begin.

To start off, head to the Seers’ Village and search for the bookcase in the house on the southwest of the bank.

When you finish this quest, you will be granted 5k crafting experience and one of the best shields in OSRS, an elemental shield.

4. The Fremennik Exiles

Lastly, we have this master-level quest that you’ll only want to consider once you have made a lot of progress.

To start this quest, you will need 65 crafting, 60 slayer, 60 smithing, 60 fishing, and 55 runecraft.

You will also need to complete The Fremmennik Isles, Lunar Diplomacy, Mountain Daughter, and Heroes’ Quest.

Once this quest has been completed, you will receive 50k crafting experience, as well as access to the Isle of Stone.

This quest will also allow you to create and equip one of the best melee helms in OSRS, the Neitiznot faceguard.

Fastest Method

If you want to level up crafting as fast as possible, there is one surefire way to gain a load of experience quickly.

This method will require a good bit of money, though you can make a bit of it back by selling what you make.

However, it is recommended to have a decent sum saved up before attempting this method!

Levels 1-20: Cutting Opals

OSRS Crafting Guide Cutting Opals

Starting at level 1, you’ll want to start cutting opals with a chisel, and you will need about 500 in total to get to level 20.

We would recommend cutting opals close to the Grand Exchange because you may need to buy more if you crush some.

Getting to level 20 will take around 10 minutes, and even if you sell back what you make, you will end up spending around 10k in total.

Levels 20-27: Cutting Sapphires

Once you hit level 20, you’ll unlock the ability to start cutting sapphires, which are much more expensive than opals.

However, cutting sapphires will provide you with about 140k XP per hour, allowing you to get to level 27 very quickly.

You will need 106 sapphires in total to reach level 27, and you can expect to lose around 40k gold even after selling them back after cutting.

Levels 27-54: Cutting Emeralds

OSRS Crafting Guide Cutting Emeralds

Once you’re at level 27, emeralds will become unlocked, and they are considerably more affordable than sapphires.

However, you will need 2091 emeralds in order to reach level 54, which will cost you about 650k gold overall.

Cutting emeralds will provide you with 170k XP per hour, making it the most efficient way to level up at this point.

Levels 54-58: Water Battlestaves

OSRS Crafting Guide Water Battlestaves

At level 54, you can stop cutting gems and start making battlestaves, which will become the fastest method of leveling up.

At this point, you will want to be creating water battlestaves using a regular battlestave and an elemental orb.

These are slightly more expensive to create than cutting emeralds, but the XP rates can be as high as 250k per hour.

Levels 58-63: Earth Battlestaves

OSRS Crafting Guide Earth Battlestaves

After four levels, at level 58, a cheaper and more efficient method will be unlocked, allowing you to create earth battlestaves.

You will need to create 972 earth battlestaves to reach level 63, but it will save money in the long run while providing a large amount of XP.

While you can continue making these staves past level 63, an even cheaper method will become available then!

Levels 63-66: Green D’hide Bodies

OSRS Crafting Guide Green Dhide Bodies

Once you hit level 63, you will unlock the ability to make green d’hide bodies, which can provide around 300k XP per hour.

These can be created using green dragon leather, which is considerably more affordable than the components for earth battlestaves.

You will need to make 687 of these in total, which will require 2061 pieces of green dragon leather.

Levels 66-71: Air Battlestaves

OSRS Crafting Guide Air Battlestaves

From level 66, you can start making air battlestaves, which are faster and cheaper than the green d’hide bodies.

You will need to make 2315 air battlestaves in order to reach level 71, which will unlock the next fastest crafting methods.

However, these next couple of methods will also be more expensive, so keep that in mind!

Levels 71-77: Blue D’hide Bodies

OSRS Crafting Guide Blue Dhide Bodies

Once you hit level 71, you can unlock the ability to make blue d’hide bodies, which provide around 20k more XP per hour than air battlestaves.

However, they will cost you quite a bit as you will need 9447 pieces of blue dragonhide leather in total.

This will cost you roughly 4 million gold overall, though it will get you to level 77 as fast as possible!

Levels 77-84: Red D’hide Bodies

OSRS Crafting Guide Red Dhide Bodies

At level 77, the ability to craft red d’hide bodies will be unlocked, and you can start crafting these until level 84.

For this, you will need around 19k pieces of red dragon leather, costing about 10 million gold on the Grand Exchange.

While this may sound steep, the next part of the method is even more expensive!

Levels 84-99: Black D’hide Bodies

OSRS Crafting Guide Black Dhide Bodies

Once you hit level 84, you’ll be in the final stretch, so you can rejoice for a moment, but be prepared to pay up.

At this point, you can start making black d’hide bodies, which is the fastest way of reaching level 99.

Crafting black d’hide bodies, you can easily earn up to 430k XP per hour, allowing you to max out your skill incredibly fast.

However, you will need to make 39k black d’hide bodies, requiring 117,246 pieces of black dragon leather.

Even if you sell back your creations, you will stand to lose around 90 million gold in total, making this incredibly expensive to do!

That said, it is not impossible to have this amount of money, especially if you have already leveled up your smithing, mining, or runecrafting skills.

Cheapest Methods

Whilst the methods listed above are definitely the fastest, they’re also definitely the most expensive.

If you’re looking for a cheaper method to level up to 99, here’s the best one:

Levels 1-50: Cutting Opals

If emeralds and sapphires are too expensive, you can always continue cutting opals until you reach level 50.

While you will gain XP much more slowly, you can actually break even with this method or even gain a small profit.

If you choose to cut opals until level 50, you will need approximately 9000 of them, not including any extras needed if some are crushed.

Levels 66-99: Air Battlestaves

Once you hit level 66, you can choose to continue crafting air battlestaves to save money, though you will still need 50 million gold to buy everything.

For this method, you will need to craft 91,187 battlestaves, though we would recommend doing this over time since it is much slower.

If you’re not rushing to level 99, this is a method to consider, especially if you’re looking to save a few bucks.

Making Jewelry

This method is one that can be used at any level and interchanged with any of the methods mentioned above.

You can start by making opal and topaz bracelets at a low level, which can then be sold for a decent sum at the Grand Exchange.

These bracelets are used in Slayer, so they are always in high demand, making them a safe way to level up and make money.

At crafting level 20, you can also start making sapphire rings and sapphire necklaces, which can also be sold for a hefty sum.

However, once you hit level 80, you can start making dragonstone amulets, which can be sold for about 12k on the Grand Exchange.

Summary

We hope you enjoyed our OSRS crafting guide and learned everything you need in order to max out your skill as quickly as possible!

While crafting is often overlooked in favor of combat skills, it can definitely have its benefits at higher levels.

Even though it is expensive to level, you can easily earn that money back once you’ve mastered this craft!
