In Old School RuneScape (OSRS), smelting is an essential skill for crafting various weapons and armor. To help players find the best smelting locations, this article ranks the top five locations. The Blast Furnace in Keldagrim tops the list for its efficiency and proximity to a bank. The Wilderness Resource Area is also recommended, offering good experience rates but with the risk of player killers. Other notable locations include Al Kharid, Edgeville, and the Neitiznot furnace. Each location is evaluated based on accessibility, convenience, and safety, catering to different playstyles and preferences..

What are the best smelting locations in OSRS?

Smithing is one of the most important skills in Old School Runescape, and it can take a while to advance.

However, knowing the best smelting locations in OSRS can make reaching level 100 a lot easier.

Fortunately, we’ve created this helpful list so that you can learn exactly where the best furnaces can be found!

The 10 Best Smelting Locations in OSRS

This list was created by rounding up all of the smelting locations in OSRS, then selecting the best ones. Then we ranked each one based on its ease of access and proximity to resources and banks.

With that in mind, here’s our list of the 10 best smelting locations in OSRS:

10. Lumbridge

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Lumbridge

Kicking off our list is the furnace in Lumbridge, which is located just north of Lumbridge Castle.

This smelting location is perfect for newer players who may have limited teleportation options.

While it isn’t the closest to a bank, it is still close enough that grabbing resources won’t take much time.

There is also an entrance within Lumbridge castle to Dorgesh-Kaan mine, though you have to complete the Recipe for Disaster quest to gain access.

However, once completed, this mine has a good supply of iron and silver ore that can then be used at the Lumbridge furnace.

Although you won’t want to stick around in Lumbridge for long, this is a solid place to get started on your smithing journey.

9. Lovakengj

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Lovakengj

One of the five cities in the Kingdom of Great Kourend, this furnace sits in a volcanic area inhabited by dwarves.

Located directly between the bank and the mine, this furnace is in the perfect spot for gathering, smelting, and storing materials.

The Lovakengj Mine is unique in that it is one of the rare mines where three iron rocks can be mined without moving.

This makes it popular for power leveling, and it can make gathering metal ore quick and easy.

Aside from this mine, there is also the Lovakite Mine and the Blast Mine, though you need 100% favor to enter there.

Overall, if you’re in the area and want to work on your smithing, this is one location you shouldn’t miss.

8. The Elemental Workshop

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Elemental Workshop

Next, we have the Elemental Workshop, which can be fully accessed after completing the Elemental Workshop II quest.

This location contains the means to smith elemental metals, something that can’t be done anywhere else.

On the first floor, players can find elemental ores and a furnace where they can be smelted with coal into an elemental metal.

These metals can then be used to create one of the best shields in OSRS, the elemental shield or the elemental helmet.

While you can only smelt elemental ore here, it is a good place to create these unique items and gain some smithing experience.

Furthermore, completing the quests associated with this area can provide you with 12.5k smithing XP, which is pretty solid.

We would definitely recommend not passing up the Elemental Workshop if you have the chance to check it out.

7. The Wilderness Resource Area

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Wilderness Resource Area

In the level 28 Wilderness, a furnace can be found a short way away from the Ferox Enclave bank.

This furnace is useful if you are mining ore in the area at one of the many mining locations.

While the Skeleton Mine here is one of the best places to mine coal in OSRS, there are also rarer elements to be found here.

For example, the Wilderness is the only free-to-play area where runite ore can be mined without being a member.

Similarly, the Bandit Camp Mine boasts large deposits of iron, coal, mithril, and adamantite rocks.

What you mine can then be taken over to this furnace and easily smelted for later use or sale.

Runite bars, in particular, can go for 12.4k a piece on the Grand Exchange, while an Adamantite bar can fetch 1.8k.

However, because the Wilderness is ripe for player-killers, you will have to be careful if you choose to use the furnace here.

6. Shilo Village

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Shilo Village

In order to use the Shilo Village furnace, you must first complete the Shilo Village quest.

While this quest is long and requires 20 crafting, 32 agility, and 4 smithing to complete, it is worth doing.

The furnace here is located directly across from the bank, making it popular for players smelting ore en masse.

However, you will need to pay 20 coins for entry to the furnace each time you want to use it.

Fortunately, this isn’t an issue for many players, especially since this furnace is the closest one to a bank in the game.

Shilo Village is also home to a substantial gem mine if you want to level your crafting and mining in between smithing.

5. Neitiznot

This village on the Fremennik Isles has the third closest furnace to a bank in the game.

It is also one of the best for OSRS mobile players because it doesn’t require you to move your camera while banking or smelting.

The smithing XP rates here are about the same as those found in Edgeville, making it a great place to level up.

Neitiznot also has great mining locations close by, including the Central Fremennik Isles mining site.

Here you can find rare runite ore and coal to help you continue smelting metal bars.

However, in order to access this village, you will need to complete the Fremennik Trials and start the Fremennik Isles quest.

While both of these quests are long, they are worth it for being able to access this furnace and resource site.

Additionally, completing the Fremennik Trials will also grant you one of the best melee helms in OSRS, the Neitiznot helm.

4. The Blast Furnace

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Blast Furnace

The Blast Furnace can be found in Keldagrim, and it is accessible to members only.

In order to gain entry to this furnace, you must first start the Giant Dwarf quest and have a smithing level of 6o or 2500 coins.

You will have to pay every 10 minutes if you’re under level 60, though using the Ring of Charos, one of the best rings in OSRS, will reduce the fee.

While these requirements may seem steep, the Blast Furnace is popular, especially since it can provide a load of XP.

Just from smelting gold ore, you can earn upwards of 130k Xp per hour, which is extremely significant.

You can also buy any ore you need, up to mithril, from Ordan the ore seller whose prices are lower than those on the Grand Exchange.

There is also a mine cart system in Keldagrim that can take you to the Dwarven Mine, where almost every type of ore can be found.

If you need to stock up on resources and smith them easily, the Blast Furnace is certainly a place to check out.

3. Al Kharid

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Al Kharid

Located in the northern Kharidian Desert, Al Kharid is the only desert city available to free players.

While this location is popular with power miners, it is also one of the best smelting locations in OSRS.

The furnace here is located just north of the bank, about 30 steps away, making it good for players with a lot of ore to smelt.

In fact, before the Edgeville furnace became available to free players, this one was considered the best.

What makes it even better is that tin, copper, iron, silver, gold, mithril, adamantite, and coal are all easily accessible here.

This is thanks to one of the best mining locations in OSRS, the Al Kharid mine.

Although you will need to pay 10 gold to enter Al Kharid using the Lumbridge toll gate, once you complete the Prince Ali Rescue quest, the fee is waived.

2. Edgeville

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Edgeville

Found on the edge of the Wilderness, this small town is the best smelting location for free-to-play players.

The furnace in this location is only 15 blocks away from the bank, making it only 4 more than the one in Prifddinas.

While you previously needed to wear Varrock armor to operate this furnace, it has since been made usable for anyone.

However, if you are wearing Varrock armor, you will receive a chance to smelting two ores at once.

There is also a mine in the center of the Edgeville dungeon that contains adamantite, mithril, silver, coal, and iron.

This can be a good place to gather resources, though it does have a number of enemies to contend with as well.

That said, if you currently aren’t a member, you won’t want to miss out on this smelting location!

1. Prifddinas

Best OSRS Smelting Locations Prifddinas

Taking our number one spot as the best smelting location in OSRS is the furnace in Prifddinas.

The furnace here is currently the closest to both an anvil and a bank, allowing you to grab stored ores easily and smith your smelted bars.

This makes earning XP relatively easy here, and you can also make quite a profit if you’re dedicated enough.

However, in order to unlock entry to Prifddinas, you will need to complete Song of the Elves, the final quest in the Elf quest series.

A grandmaster-level quest, Song of the Elves requires 70 in agility, construction, farming, herblore, hunter, mining, smithing, and woodcutting to finish.

While it isn’t easy, it is worth it for the amount of XP and easy smelting that can be found in this location.

Summary

We hope you’ve enjoyed our list of the best smelting locations in OSRS and learned where you should head next!
