Welcome back! In this posts, we’ll explore some Minecraft mods that transform the game into the ultimate survival experience. All of these mods were tested with Minecraft 1.12.2, and links to download them can be found in the description below.
Tough as Nails:
To add new survival mechanics to Minecraft, we recommend the Tough as Nails mod. This mod requires you to manage your body temperature and thirst, but it’s not too challenging with the new blocks and armor that are available. Even though it’s no longer updated, Tough as Nails still works perfectly.

Serene Seasons:
Another compatible mod is Serene Seasons, which adds seasons to Minecraft. During winter, you’ll see snow in biomes where it usually wouldn’t appear, and in spring, you can expect more rain. When paired with Tough as Nails, the current season will impact your body temperature.

Nutrition:
Nutrition assigns custom food groups with different levels that provide beneficial or negative effects. The default setup includes dairy, fruit, grain, protein, and vegetables. If you’re lacking in most nutrients, you’ll receive mining fatigue, while being well-fed gives you resistance.

Animania:
Animania overhauls passive creatures in Minecraft, giving them new textures, models, and animations. Some animals will even fight back and won’t breed unless they’re happy. This mod also includes new breeds for each animal type and genders.

Biomes of Plenty:
To make your world feel more realistic, we recommend installing a biome generation mod like Biomes of Plenty. It adds numerous new biomes for both the overworld and nether, and make sure to enable it during world creation.

Realistic Torches:
Realistic Torches adds difficulty to Minecraft by requiring you to light torches using a matchbox or flint and steel. Torches will also go out after 60 minutes of real-world time or if they’re hit by rain, forcing you to seek alternative light sources.

Hardcore Darkness:
Hardcore Darkness removes the minimum block and skylight in Minecraft, making areas without nearby light sources completely blacked out. It’s recommended to use Optifine with Dynamic Lights to carry a torch during the night.

Blood Moon:
This mod adds a 5% chance of a Blood Moon spawning each night, increasing the number of hostile mobs and their proximity to the player, making survival more challenging.

Dynamic Surroundings:
Although it doesn’t necessarily increase the survival aspect, this mod enhances the audio and visual effects of the game, providing new sounds for biomes and footsteps, and visuals for auroras and fireflies.
Recurrent Complex & Ruins: These mods generate hundreds of new structures, ranging from simple to large, with valuable loot to collect.

Roguelike Dungeons:
This mod adds large, multi-level dungeons that become progressively more challenging as you descend deeper. The rewards are equally valuable.

Reskillable:
This mod introduces eight new skills, allowing you to level up various aspects of Minecraft, such as mining, gathering, attack, defense, building, farming, agility, and magic. Unlock new abilities and content as you level up.

Rough Tweaks:
This mod alters Minecraft’s health system, making it more realistic. A full hunger bar will no longer regenerate health, forcing you to craft bandages, med kits, and salves to replenish hearts.

Wearable Backpacks:
This mod adds an immersive way to store and carry items in Minecraft. The 3D backpack can be dyed and sits on the player’s back, but takes up the chest slot.

Food Funk:
This mod causes food to rot over time, adding a new level of realism and requiring you to be more mindful when planting and harvesting crops. You can use the rotten food to create compost to enhance plant growth, or use ice boxes to prevent food from rotting.
